Laser Operculectomy

Laser operculectomy is a minimally invasive periodontal surgical procedure in which a dental laser is used to remove the operculum (a flap of gingival tissue covering a partially erupted tooth), most commonly associated with partially erupted mandibular third molars.

Indications

• Recurrent pericoronitis
• Pain and inflammation around partially erupted teeth
• Difficulty in maintaining oral hygiene under the operculum
• Prior to orthodontic or prosthodontic treatment

• Diode laser (most common)
• Nd:YAG
• CO₂ laser
• Er:YAG

Procedure

1. Local or topical anesthesia
2. Laser excision of the operculum
3. Continuous irrigation (if required)
4. Achieving hemostasis
5. Post-operative instructions
